Guitar Fretboard Explained (Beginner Guide)
Guitar Fretboard Explained
Understanding the guitar fretboard notes is one of the biggest breakthroughs for beginners. This guide explains what notes are on the guitar fretboard, how notes repeat, and how to start learning the fretboard without memorising everything at once.
πΈ π Guitar fretboard basics (what you need to know first)
A standard guitar has 6 strings and repeating musical notes along the fretboard. Most guitars use standard tuning:
- 6th string (thickest): E
- 5th string: A
- 4th string: D
- 3rd string: G
- 2nd string: B
- 1st string (thinnest): E

πΈ πΌ Musical notes on the fretboard
Western music uses 12 repeating notes:
A β Aβ―/Bβ β B β C β Cβ―/Dβ β D β Dβ―/Eβ β E β F β Fβ―/Gβ β G β Gβ―/Aβ
After 12 notes, the sequence repeats at a higher pitch. This is why the 12th fret is so important on guitar.
πΈ π Notes on the guitar fretboard (first 12 frets)
Each fret moves up by one note (one semitone). Below is the note sequence starting from each open string.
Low E string (6th string):
E β F β Fβ― β G β Gβ― β A β Aβ― β B β C β Cβ― β D β Dβ― β E
A string (5th string):
A β Aβ― β B β C β Cβ― β D β Dβ― β E β F β Fβ― β G β Gβ― β A
D string (4th string):
D β Dβ― β E β F β Fβ― β G β Gβ― β A β Aβ― β B β C β Cβ― β D
G string (3rd string):
G β Gβ― β A β Aβ― β B β C β Cβ― β D β Dβ― β E β F β Fβ― β G
B string (2nd string):
B β C β Cβ― β D β Dβ― β E β F β Fβ― β G β Gβ― β A β Aβ― β B
High E string (1st string):
E β F β Fβ― β G β Gβ― β A β Aβ― β B β C β Cβ― β D β Dβ― β E
Notice: The 12th fret is the same note as the open string, one octave higher.
πΈ π§ Why the 12th fret matters
The 12th fret marks where all notes repeat. Once you learn the notes up to the 12th fret, you automatically know the rest of the fretboard.
- 12th fret = same note as open string
- 13th fret = same as 1st fret
- 14th fret = same as 2nd fret
πΈ βοΈ How beginners should learn the fretboard (donβt memorise everything)
You do not need to memorise all notes at once. The easiest beginner approach:
- Learn the open string names (E A D G B E)
- Learn natural notes only (A B C D E F G)
- Focus on one string per day
- Use the 12th fret to spot repeats
This method builds understanding without overwhelm.
πΈ π Why learning fretboard notes is worth it
- Find chords faster
- Understand scales and solos
- Play anywhere on the neck
- Follow lessons without guessing
- Communicate clearly with other musicians
