Where Is Armenia Located?

Armenia lies on the Armenian Highlands in the South Caucasus. The country has no coastline, and much of its territory sits at high elevation. Yerevan occupies part of the Ararat Valley, while eastern Armenia contains Lake Sevan and extensive mountain country.

  • North: Georgia, towards Tbilisi.
  • East: Azerbaijan, with sensitive border areas.
  • South: Iran, beyond Syunik province.
  • West: Turkey, across the western frontier.

Mount Ararat is a prominent landmark visible from parts of Armenia, but the mountain itself is in Turkey. Armenia's highest mountain is Mount Aragats, northwest of Yerevan.

Armenia's Provinces and Main Areas

Armenia has 10 marzes (provinces) and a separately administered capital. The table groups provinces to make them easier to locate on the map rather than implying they are separate official regions.

Area What to find
Yerevan Capital city, Hrazdan River, central streets and museums.
North Shirak, Lori and Tavush; Gyumri, Vanadzor and forested valleys.
Central-west Aragatsotn and Armavir; Mount Aragats and the Ararat Plain.
Central-east Kotayk and Gegharkunik; Garni, Tsaghkadzor and Lake Sevan.
South Ararat, Vayots Dzor and Syunik; vineyards, gorges and Tatev.

Provincial boundaries help with regional orientation, but they do not always match natural landscape divisions. Zoom in to identify smaller communities and connecting roads.

Cities and Landmarks on the Map

  • Yerevan: Armenia's capital and main urban centre, with Republic Square and the Cascade complex.
  • Gyumri: A northern city known for historic architecture and cultural life.
  • Vanadzor and Dilijan: Northern destinations near valleys, woodland and mountain routes.
  • Lake Sevan: A large high-altitude lake east of Yerevan, with towns and shoreline viewpoints.
  • Garni and Geghard: Well-known heritage sites in the Kotayk area.
  • Tatev Monastery: A southern landmark near steep gorges in Syunik province.
  • Mount Aragats: Armenia's highest summit, with upland routes and changing mountain weather.

Other places worth locating include Goris, Jermuk, Khor Virap and the monasteries of Haghpat and Sanahin. Their access routes can differ substantially from straight-line distances.

Roads, Transport and Travel

Yerevan is the main hub for road travel and international air arrivals. Zvartnots International Airport serves the capital, while highways connect Yerevan with Gyumri, Lake Sevan and the southern provinces. Armenia also has rail services on selected corridors, including routes to Georgia, but coverage is limited compared with the road network.

Mountain roads, winter weather and border restrictions can affect travel. The embedded map is useful for orientation, not real-time routing. Check current official travel advice and transport arrangements before planning journeys near international borders.
