Where Is Botswana Located?

Botswana sits north of South Africa, east of Namibia and southwest of Zimbabwe. A short northern boundary connects it with Zambia near Kazungula. It has no coastline, and much of the country occupies the Kalahari Basin.

  • South and southeast: South Africa, with major crossings serving travel to Gaborone and Lobatse.
  • West and north: Namibia, including routes towards the northwest.
  • Northeast: Zimbabwe and the short Zambia boundary near the Zambezi River.

The eastern corridor contains many towns and transport links. In contrast, the northwest includes seasonal waterways, and the southwest has extensive semi-arid landscapes. The country spans a large area, so towns that look close on a national map can be far apart by road.

Botswana Regions and Major Towns

Botswana's administrative district arrangements have changed over time. The table below groups places by geographic area rather than presenting an exhaustive or fixed district list.

Area Key places and features
Southeast Gaborone, Lobatse and nearby cross-border roads.
Eastern corridor Francistown, Palapye, Serowe and major north–south routes.
Northwest Maun, the Okavango Delta and surrounding wetlands.
North Kasane, Chobe National Park and the Kazungula crossing.
Central and west Ghanzi, the Central Kalahari and dry grassland areas.
Southwest Kgalagadi landscapes and widely spaced settlements.

Landmarks and Natural Features

  • Okavango Delta: A UNESCO-listed inland wetland of channels, floodplains and islands northwest of Maun.
  • Chobe National Park: A major wildlife area near Kasane, known for elephants and river habitats.
  • Makgadikgadi Pans: Extensive salt pans in the northeast-central part of Botswana.
  • Central Kalahari Game Reserve: A vast protected landscape of grassland, scrub and sandy terrain.
  • Tsodilo Hills: A UNESCO World Heritage rock-art landscape in the northwest.
  • Gaborone: The capital and principal urban centre, with government, commercial and transport facilities.

Some protected areas have restricted access, seasonal roads or special entry requirements. Confirm current conditions with local authorities or park operators before visiting.

Seasonal landscape changes: Northern wetlands expand and contract as water arrives from the wider Okavango catchment. In the dry season, some wildlife concentrates around permanent water, while rain can temporarily fill salt pans and smaller watercourses. These seasonal variations influence what visitors see on the map and on the ground. An ordinary street map does not show current flood depth, wildlife distribution or safe access routes.

Roads, Airports and Travel Connections

Major roads connect Gaborone with Francistown and other eastern towns. Routes also extend towards Maun, Kasane, Namibia, Zimbabwe and South Africa. Sir Seretse Khama International Airport serves Gaborone, while Maun and Kasane are important gateways for northern wildlife destinations.

Distances are substantial, and roads outside main corridors may be unsealed or affected by weather. This map shows general geography, not live driving times, road closures or border operating hours.
