Where Is Burkina Faso Located?
Burkina Faso lies between the western Sahel and the inland savannas of West Africa. Mali borders it to the north and west, Niger to the east, and Benin, Togo, Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire along the southern side. It has no coastline; access to seaports depends on overland connections through neighbouring countries.
Much of the country is relatively flat or gently undulating. Its northern areas generally experience drier conditions than the south, where rainfall supports more woodland, farming and seasonal waterways. French is widely used, alongside national languages including Mooré, Dioula and Fulfulde.
Burkina Faso's 17 Regions
In July 2025, Burkina Faso adopted a revised structure of 17 regions and 47 provinces, replacing the previous 13-region, 45-province arrangement. The regions received new names drawn from national languages. Koudougou lies west of Ouagadougou, while Ouahigouya is a major northern centre. Fada N'Gourma serves eastern Burkina Faso, and Banfora is a useful reference point in the greener southwest. Other names to look for include Kaya, Dori, Dédougou, Tenkodogo, Gaoua and Djibo. Zoom in to see smaller settlements that may not appear at national scale.
Rivers, Landscape and Natural Features
Burkina Faso's landscapes range from dry Sahelian plains in the north to savanna and wooded areas farther south. Several rivers belong to the Volta basin, including the Mouhoun (Black Volta), Nakambé (White Volta) and Nazinon (Red Volta). Seasonal rainfall influences their flow, especially outside the wet season.
In the southwest, the Banfora area includes distinctive sandstone formations, waterfalls and nearby lakes. The country's highest terrain is also towards the southwestern borderlands. Protected landscapes and wildlife areas are present in different parts of Burkina Faso, but access and local conditions should always be checked before any visit.
Roads, Airports and Travel Information
Major roads link Ouagadougou with Bobo-Dioulasso and several regional capitals. Overland routes also connect the country with Ghana, Côte d'Ivoire, Togo, Benin, Niger and Mali. Ouagadougou Airport provides air access to the capital; other airfields appear on detailed maps.
Road surfaces, seasonal conditions and access restrictions can vary considerably. Some areas face serious security risks, and map visibility does not establish that a road, border crossing or destination is safe or open. For travel planning, consult current official advice and local transport information rather than relying on this reference map alone.
