Where Is the Dominican Republic Located?
The country occupies the eastern portion of Hispaniola, between Cuba and Puerto Rico in the Caribbean region. Haiti is its only land neighbour. The Atlantic Ocean lies to the north, the Caribbean Sea to the south and the Mona Passage to the east.
Much of the interior is mountainous. The Cordillera Central contains Pico Duarte, the country's highest peak, while the Cibao Valley is an important agricultural and urban corridor. Low-lying coastal areas include busy towns, ports and resort districts. The contrast between highland valleys and two different coastlines helps explain why settlements, roads and visitor destinations are distributed unevenly across the country.
