Where Is Lithuania Located?

Lithuania is the southernmost of the three Baltic states. Latvia is to the north; Belarus is to the east and southeast; Poland is to the southwest; and Kaliningrad, a Russian exclave, is to the southwest and west. The Baltic Sea forms part of its western boundary.

Most of Lithuania consists of relatively gentle terrain rather than high mountains. The Nemunas River crosses the country and reaches the Baltic through a delta. Forests, wetlands and lakes are especially noticeable on regional maps of the east and south.

Lithuania's Counties and Major Cities

Lithuania has 10 administrative counties. The table identifies each county and a useful city or town to locate on the map; these are not a ranking of their size.

County Map reference
Vilnius Vilnius, national capital and historic Old Town
Kaunas Kaunas, a major inland city at two rivers
Klaipėda Klaipėda, Baltic port and ferry connections
Šiauliai Šiauliai, northern Lithuania
Panevėžys Panevėžys, northern-central Lithuania
Alytus Alytus and southern forest regions
Marijampolė Marijampolė, southwestern Lithuania
Tauragė Tauragė and western inland districts
Telšiai Telšiai, in the Samogitia region
Utena Utena and northeastern lake country

Administrative counties are different from Lithuania's five traditional ethnographic regions: Aukštaitija, Žemaitija (Samogitia), Dzūkija, Suvalkija and Lithuania Minor. Their cultural boundaries do not precisely follow county lines.

Landmarks and Natural Areas to Find

  • Vilnius Old Town: Historic streets, churches and squares in the capital.
  • Trakai Castle: A distinctive island castle west of Vilnius.
  • Kaunas: Known for interwar architecture, historic neighbourhoods and riverfront areas.
  • Curonian Spit: A narrow sandy peninsula with dunes, forests and settlements such as Nida; it is shared with Russia.
  • Hill of Crosses: A pilgrimage site near Šiauliai.
  • Aukštaitija National Park: Lakes, woodland and villages in northeastern Lithuania.

For a country-wide view, the coastline and large cities are easiest to identify first. Zooming in reveals smaller settlements and the routes connecting the landmarks.

Road, Rail and Coastal Connections

Major roads connect Vilnius, Kaunas and Klaipėda, while routes north lead toward Latvia and south toward Poland. Rail services link important Lithuanian cities, although routes, frequencies and cross-border options can change. Klaipėda provides port services, and Vilnius and Kaunas have airports. Use current operators' information for travel planning rather than relying solely on the map.

What the Lithuania Map Can Help You Explore

  • Compare the locations of Vilnius, Kaunas, Klaipėda and other major towns.
  • Follow the Baltic coastline and identify the Curonian Lagoon and Curonian Spit.
  • Understand how the Nemunas River connects inland areas with the west.
  • Find broad forest and lake regions away from the largest cities.
  • See Lithuania’s position between Poland, Latvia, Belarus and Kaliningrad.

For a closer look at individual places, zoom to the town or attraction and inspect the road network. At country scale, minor roads, local administrative boundaries and smaller landmarks may not appear until you zoom in. Border markings on general-purpose digital maps are simplified and should not be treated as legal boundary evidence.
