Where Is Moldova Located?
Moldova sits between Romania and Ukraine, northeast of the Balkan Peninsula and west of the Black Sea. It has no coastline. Its western boundary largely follows the Prut River, while the Dniester runs through the eastern part of the country. The terrain is predominantly low hills, river valleys, farmland and woodland.
- West: Romania, across much of the Prut River.
- North and east: Ukraine and the Dniester basin.
- South: Southern Moldova approaches the lower Danube near Giurgiulești, with Romania and Ukraine nearby.
The country is relatively compact, but driving routes between cities and rural attractions can differ from straight-line distances. Use the map for orientation rather than as a live route planner.
Moldova Regions and Major Cities
Moldova has 32 districts, alongside municipalities and areas with special administrative status. The following groups are useful for understanding the country geographically; they are not a replacement for official administrative boundaries.
| Area | Places and map features |
|---|---|
| Chișinău | Capital, largest city, main airport and central transport hub. |
| Northern Moldova | Bălți, Edineț and Soroca; rolling farmland and Dniester valley scenery. |
| Central Moldova | Orhei, Ungheni, monasteries, vineyards and wooded hills. |
| Southern Moldova | Cahul and Comrat; agricultural plains and the Lower Prut area. |
| Găgăuzia | Autonomous territorial unit in the south, with Comrat as its administrative centre. |
| Transnistrian region | Eastern Dniester area including Tiraspol; separatist authorities exercise de facto control. |
Administrative note: Moldova claims sovereignty over Transnistria, but the region is not under effective central-government control. Map boundary styles may differ between providers. A proposal to reorganise Moldova's districts was announced in October 2026; the 32-district structure is used here until changes take effect.

Roads, Transport and Border Connections
Chișinău is the principal road, rail and air hub. Roads connect it with Bălți to the north, Orhei to the northeast, Ungheni towards Romania and Cahul to the south. International travellers commonly use Chișinău International Airport, road border crossings and selected rail routes.
Border access and transport services can change, particularly around Ukraine and the Transnistrian region. Check current official travel advice and operator schedules rather than assuming all mapped crossings are open.
