Where Is Montenegro Located?
Montenegro occupies part of the western Balkans, across the Adriatic Sea from Italy. The coastal strip is narrow in places, with mountains rising sharply inland. Its neighbouring countries are Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Kosovo and Albania.
The country covers roughly 13,800 square kilometres. Montenegro uses the euro, although it is not a member of the European Union. Distances on a map can appear short, but mountain roads and winding coastal routes can make journeys longer than expected.
Montenegro Regions and Major Cities
For geographic reference, Montenegro is often described in three broad areas: the coast, the central region and the northern mountains. These are informal geographic groupings, not an official list of administrative regions. Local government is organised into municipalities.
| Area or city | What to find on the map |
|---|---|
| Podgorica | Capital city in the central lowlands, near the MoraÄa River. |
| Cetinje | Historic royal capital near Mount LovÄen. |
| Bay of Kotor | Kotor, Perast, Tivat and Herceg Novi around an enclosed Adriatic bay. |
| Southern coast | Budva, Bar and Ulcinj, with beaches and seaside settlements. |
| Northern mountains | Žabljak, Pljevlja and mountain landscapes around Durmitor. |
| Eastern highlands | Plav, Gusinje and the Prokletije mountain range. |
Landmarks and Natural Features

- Durmitor National Park: Mountain scenery, glacial lakes and access to the Tara River canyon.
- Lake Skadar: Large lake shared with Albania, with wetlands and bird habitats.
- LovÄen National Park: Mountain landscapes above the coast and near Cetinje.
- Ostrog Monastery: Religious site built into a cliff face in central Montenegro.
- Biogradska Gora and Prokletije: National parks protecting forests, lakes and high mountain terrain.
Coast, Climate and Landscape
Montenegro has contrasting climates across a relatively small area. Coastal towns generally experience Mediterranean conditions, while inland valleys and higher mountains have cooler winters and greater seasonal variation. The Bay of Kotor is sheltered by surrounding mountains, whereas the south coast opens onto the Adriatic.
The Tara River cuts through a dramatic canyon in the north, and Lake Skadar extends across the border into Albania. When using a map, note that protected areas, national parks and mountain roads may require different planning from ordinary urban sightseeing. Seasonal weather can affect access at higher elevations.
Roads, Airports and Travel Connections
Montenegro has international airports near Podgorica and Tivat. Main roads connect Podgorica with the coast and northern towns. The BarâPodgoricaâBijelo Polje railway corridor continues towards Serbia. Rail coverage is limited compared with roads, particularly along the coast.
Coastal traffic can be slow during busy travel periods. Check current border procedures, road conditions, public transport timetables and travel advice before a journey. This map is for orientation rather than turn-by-turn directions.
