Where Is Rwanda Located?

Rwanda lies just south of the equator in Africa's Great Lakes region. Uganda borders it to the north, Tanzania to the east, Burundi to the south and the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the west. It has no coastline. Lake Kivu forms part of the western border, while the Virunga volcanic mountains rise in the northwest.

The country covers approximately 26,338 square kilometres. Its varying elevation creates contrasting landscapes, from the cooler highlands to the warmer eastern plains.

Rwanda's Provinces and Major Areas

Rwanda has four provinces and the City of Kigali, divided into 30 districts. The five broad administrative areas are useful for understanding the country map.

Area What to find on the map
City of Kigali Capital and main urban centre; includes Gasabo, Kicukiro and Nyarugenge districts.
Northern Province Musanze, volcanic highlands and access to Volcanoes National Park.
Southern Province Huye, Nyanza, cultural attractions and southern highlands.
Eastern Province Rwamagana, Nyagatare, savannah and Akagera National Park.
Western Province Rubavu, Karongi, Rusizi, Lake Kivu and forested hills.

Kigali is the principal transport and business hub. Other useful map reference points include Musanze in the north, Huye in the south, Rubavu beside Lake Kivu and Rusizi near the southwestern border.

Rwanda Landmarks and Natural Features

  • Lake Kivu: A large freshwater lake along the western border, with waterfront towns including Rubavu and Karongi.
  • Volcanoes National Park: Protected mountain habitat in the northwest, famous for mountain gorillas and the Virunga volcanoes.
  • Nyungwe National Park: Southwestern mountain rainforest with forest trails and diverse wildlife.
  • Akagera National Park: Eastern savannah, wetlands and lakes close to Tanzania.
  • Kigali Genocide Memorial: An important historical and remembrance site in the capital.
  • King's Palace Museum: A heritage destination at Nyanza in Southern Province.

Roads, Airports and Getting Around

Kigali International Airport is the country's principal international air gateway. Main roads connect Kigali with Musanze, Huye, the Lake Kivu towns and border crossings. Rwanda has no seaport, so cross-border road connections are important for travel and freight.

Distances can be deceptive because mountain roads wind through steep terrain. Use the map for orientation, then check current routes, border requirements, park access and road conditions before travelling. Not every remote road is suitable for all vehicles.

For a broader view, zoom out to see Rwanda in relation to the African Great Lakes and neighbouring transport corridors. Zooming in makes it easier to distinguish Kigali’s districts, the shores of Lake Kivu and the hilly terrain around Musanze. National park boundaries and individual trails may not appear at every zoom level.
