The circle of fifths is a diagram that shows how musical keys are related. Each step around the circle moves by a musical interval called a perfect fifth.

Moving clockwise adds sharps. Moving counter-clockwise adds flats.

Starting from C (no sharps or flats), the keys move like this:

C → G → D → A → E → B → F♯

Each step adds one sharp to the key signature.

Moving the other direction adds flats:

C → F → B♭ → E♭ → A♭ → D♭ → G♭
