Where Is Algeria Located?

Algeria faces the Mediterranean Sea to the north and forms part of the Maghreb region. Its northern coast lies opposite southern Europe. To the east are Tunisia and Libya; to the south are Niger and Mali; and to the west and southwest are Mauritania, Western Sahara and Morocco.

The northern strip includes coastal plains and the Tell Atlas. Inland, higher plateaus and the Saharan Atlas transition into enormous desert landscapes. These physical differences help explain why settlement and transport networks are concentrated in the north.

Algeria Regions and Major Cities

Algeria is divided into 69 wilayas, sometimes translated as provinces. Eleven new wilayas were established by legislation in April 2026, increasing the total from 58. Some online maps may still display the former boundaries while administrative responsibilities are being transferred.

Area Places and features
Algiers and centre-north Algiers, Blida and nearby coastal districts; capital city and important transport routes.
Western coast Oran, Mostaganem and Tlemcen; ports, urban centres and coastal landscapes.
Eastern north Constantine, Annaba and Béjaïa; elevated terrain, cities and Mediterranean access.
High plateaus Sétif, Batna and inland farming areas between mountain systems.
Northern Sahara Ghardaïa, Ouargla and Biskra; oases and connections to desert routes.
Deep Sahara Tamanrasset, Djanet and remote desert regions, including rocky massifs and dunes.

These are broad geographic groupings, not the official list of all 69 wilayas. The map's administrative labels may update at different times.

Algeria Landmarks to Find on the Map

  • Algiers Casbah: Historic urban quarter overlooking the Mediterranean.
  • Constantine: City known for bridges spanning deep gorges.
  • Tassili n'Ajjer: Saharan plateau and rock-art landscape in the southeast.
  • Hoggar (Ahaggar) Mountains: Rugged desert mountains near Tamanrasset.
  • Ghardaïa and M'Zab Valley: Oasis settlements with distinctive architecture.
  • Tipasa: Archaeological remains near the Mediterranean coast.

Landmarks are spread across very different environments. A location that looks close on a national map may still involve substantial travel distances, especially in the desert.

Roads, Airports and Getting Around

The northern part of Algeria has the densest road and railway connections. The East–West Highway links many northern urban areas, while roads leading south cross sparsely populated terrain. Rail services connect important northern cities, but not all desert destinations.

Major airports include those serving Algiers, Oran and Constantine. Domestic flights can be useful for long north–south journeys. Check current airline, railway and road information before planning travel; routes, availability and local conditions can change.
