Angola is a large country on Africa's western coast. Its geography ranges from beaches and coastal plains to highlands, tropical forests and the dry landscapes of the southwest. The separate northern province of Cabinda is an important feature to recognise on a country map.
Angola lies on the Atlantic coast of southwestern Africa, with Luanda as its capital. It borders Namibia, Zambia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and, through Cabinda, the Republic of the Congo. Angola has 21 provinces, following an administrative reorganisation effective in 2025.

Where Is Angola Located?
Angola occupies part of the Atlantic-facing side of Africa, north of Namibia and west of Zambia. The Democratic Republic of the Congo lies to its north and northeast. Cabinda, Angola's northern exclave, borders both Congolese countries and has its own Atlantic coastline.

The country covers approximately 1.25 million square kilometres. Its main geographic features include the central highlands, coastal lowlands, eastern plateaus and the Namib Desert's northern reaches.
Angola's Provinces and Geographic Areas
Angola has 21 provinces. Maps and older references may still show 18 because the newer administrative structure took effect in January 2025. The table groups useful areas for orientation rather than reproducing administrative boundaries.

| Luanda coast | Luanda, ports, urban districts and nearby coastal areas. |
| Northern Angola | UÃge, Zaire, Bengo and forested or agricultural landscapes. |
| Central highlands | Huambo, Bié and cooler elevated terrain. |

| Cabinda | Separated northern province, with its own city, forests and coast. |
Other provinces include Cuanza Norte, Cuanza Sul, Cunene, HuÃla, Icolo e Bengo, Lunda Norte, Lunda Sul and Malanje. Provincial boundaries can be difficult to identify at low map zoom levels.

Roads, Airports and Getting Around
Angola's road network connects Luanda with provincial capitals and major inland towns, although distances are considerable and road conditions vary. Railway corridors serve parts of the country, including the route linking the Lobito coast with the interior.
Air travel is important for longer journeys. Check current airline, airport and ground transport arrangements before setting out. A geographic map can help you locate destinations but is not a live navigation or journey-planning service.
