Where Is Bosnia and Herzegovina Located?
The country sits between the inland Balkans and the Adriatic coast. Croatia borders it mainly to the north and west, Serbia to the east and Montenegro to the south-east. Its small coastal opening is at Neum, between sections of Croatia's coastline.
Mountain ranges dominate much of the interior, while the Sava River marks part of the northern boundary. The Neretva runs south through Mostar toward the Adriatic. These waterways and mountain corridors help explain where towns, roads and railways developed.
Administrative Areas and Major Cities
Bosnia and Herzegovina has two constituent entitiesâthe Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina and Republika Srpskaâplus BrÄko District, which has a distinct self-governing status. The Federation is divided into ten cantons. These administrative divisions should not be confused with the broader geographic names Bosnia and Herzegovina.
