Where Is Mozambique Located?
Mozambique lies between eastern Africa's interior and the Indian Ocean. Tanzania borders its north; Malawi and Zambia lie to the north-west; Zimbabwe lies to the west; and South Africa and Eswatini are along its southern and south-western borders. Madagascar is offshore across the Mozambique Channel, not a land-border neighbour.
The Zambezi River crosses central Mozambique before reaching the ocean. Lake Malawi (Lake Niassa) forms part of the north-western border. The country's lengthy northâsouth shape means travel between distant cities can involve substantial distances.
Mozambique Provinces and Main Areas
The country comprises 10 provinces and the separately administered Maputo City. The table groups provinces geographically; it is not a description of formal regional governments.
| Area | Provinces and main features |
|---|---|
| North | Niassa, Cabo Delgado and Nampula; northern highlands, Pemba, Nampula and coastal islands. |
| Centre | Zambézia, Tete, Manica and Sofala; the Zambezi valley, Beira, Chimoio and inland mountains. |
| South | Inhambane, Gaza and Maputo Province; beaches, wetlands, regional towns and southern roads. |
| Capital | Maputo City is a separate province-level administrative unit on the southern coast. |
Province boundaries and city names are easier to see at closer zoom levels. The map also shows the relationship between inland settlements, coastal ports and offshore islands.

Roads, Airports and Getting Around
The EN1 road corridor provides an important northâsouth connection, while routes through Tete and other border areas link Mozambique with inland neighbours. Maputo, Beira, Nampula and other cities serve as regional transport centres. Airports and ports support domestic and international connections, but routes, schedules and road conditions can change.
Use the map for orientation rather than live directions. Check official travel advice, transport operators and road information before making journeys, particularly in remote areas or during heavy rainfall.
