Where Is Senegal Located?
Senegal lies at Africa's westernmost mainland edge. The Atlantic Ocean forms its western coastline. Mauritania lies to the north, Mali to the east, and Guinea and Guinea-Bissau to the south. The Gambia extends inland from the Atlantic along the Gambia River, separating much of southern Casamance from northern Senegal.
The Senegal River marks much of the northern frontier with Mauritania. The country's interior transitions from relatively dry northern landscapes to woodlands, wetlands and river valleys farther south. Dakar is positioned well west of most of the country's inland towns.
