Guitar Note Names Explained (A–G, Sharps & Flats)

Guitar Note Names Explained

Understanding guitar note names is essential for learning the fretboard, building chords, and making sense of music theory. This beginner guide explains the note letters A to G, how sharps and flats work, and how these notes appear on the guitar.

🎸 📋 The musical note letters (A–G)

Western music uses only seven note letters:

A – B – C – D – E – F – G

After G, the sequence starts again at A. These same seven letters repeat across the entire guitar fretboard.

🎸 🎼 What are sharps (♯) and flats (♭)?

Between most note letters, there is a note in between called a sharp or flat. These are the same sound, just named differently.

  • Sharp (♯): one fret higher
  • Flat (♭): one fret lower

Example:

  • G♯ = one fret higher than G
  • A♭ = one fret lower than A

G♯ and A♭ are the same note on the guitar — just named differently.

🎸 ❗ Important rule: no sharps or flats between B–C and E–F

There are no sharps or flats between:

  • B → C
  • E → F

This means B goes straight to C, and E goes straight to F on the fretboard. This rule explains many fretboard patterns.

🎼 All 12 Notes Used on the Guitar

Although there are only seven letters, guitar music uses 12 repeating notes:

A – A♯/B♭ – B – C – C♯/D♭ – D – D♯/E♭ – E – F – F♯/G♭ – G – G♯/A♭

After these 12 notes, the pattern repeats at a higher pitch.

🎸 📋 How note names appear on the guitar fretboard

On the guitar:

  • Each fret moves up by one note
  • Notes repeat every 12 frets
  • The same note appears in multiple places

🎸 🔁 Note names + octaves

When you move up 12 frets, you reach the same note name again — this is an octave.

Example:

  • A string, 3rd fret = C
  • A string, 15th fret = C (octave)
